During the last election campaign, some politicians seemed to suggest that cash for Poles was losing its importance. After the public reaction, they had to verify their progressive views. Although Poles are increasingly using plastic money, we still love cash. Unfortunately, cash is not entirely at the disposal of the banking establishment, for which money in traditional form is only a burden. However, there is a growing group of Bitcoin investors behind cash.
When Bitcoin was created in 2008, it was a kind of response to the wrong banking policy. At the foundation of most cryptocurrencies are economic fundamentals that significantly limit mechanisms such as inflation. As a result, cryptocurrencies have gained recognition not only among technical geeks but also among libertarians. It is precisely for them that Bitcoin ATMs, or bitomats, were created, which enable the purchase and sale of cryptocurrencies using cash.
The first bitomats were built as modifications of retired bank machines. Today, they are mostly dedicated machines. Their function is simple - to exchange cash for cryptocurrencies. A characteristic feature of Bitcoin ATMs is the lack of transaction limits. While a traditional ATM allows us to withdraw a maximum of 800 zlotys, a bitomat is limited only by the availability of cryptocurrencies in the user's portfolio.
The market for bitomats is one of the fastest-growing sectors in fintech. Bitomats are increasingly taking up prominent positions in shopping malls, which is driving interest in cryptocurrencies among ordinary people. Moreover, thanks to the transaction structure, in which we send Bitcoins and receive real cash, everyone sees that cryptocurrencies have real value.
In Poland, there are over 200 bitomats, and in cities like Warsaw, their number is counted in dozens. New market players are also appearing. Some of them, such as Egera from Poznań, you may also associate with other sectors of the cryptocurrency market.
Until recently, there were only two operators of bitomats on the Polish market. In recent months, the situation has changed, and the oligopoly has been disrupted. What's more, on the bitomat map, Polish companies with extensive experience in cryptocurrency exchanges are present. A good example of this is Egera, which has been operating as a cryptocurrency exchange since February 2019 and, in mid-October, set up the first bitomat in Poznań. What's more, thanks to the locally-oriented nature of the service, by using a bitomat, you support Polish companies.
The prospects for the development of bitomats in Poland seem promising. Growing interest in cryptocurrencies, developing blockchain infrastructure, and the desire to introduce cash into the constitution by some political parties make it likely that the bitomat market will develop at a dynamic pace.
