BWT Alpine F1 Team previews the 2022 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix

Finance Press Release Finance Press Release 19.05.2022 12:56
BWT Alpine F1 Team previews the sixth race weekend of the 2022 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the Spanish Grand Prix. Otmar Szafnauer: "Firstly, the aim is for us to have both cars inside the points, which we're yet to achieve since the first race of the season. If we're going to achieve our goals for the year, then this is the minimum requirement the remaining Grands Prix. We've demonstrated consistently we have a competitive car and it's important now that we convert that promising pace into points on Sundays. We're certainly aiming to bounce back from Miami by having a much better, and cleaner, race weekend. We can only control what is in front of us, so that's the target in Barcelona and both drivers are ready to deliver." Esteban Ocon:  "Barcelona is one of those circuits all teams, and all drivers, know very well. We have raced and tested there for a while now, but of course it does bring its own challenges just like any track. The first two sectors are fast and can be tricky, with tyre management being very important. The final sector is slow speed and you normally feel a loss of grip towards the end of the lap as the tyres overheat. In general, it's quite difficult to overtake in Barcelona, although the long downhill straight can give power and DRS advantage, so that is a key part of the circuit. It makes Qualifying and race strategy particularly important to gain track position. Last year, I qualified fifth on the grid so it is a track I enjoy, and we know we can be competitive there." It's a track that really shows where your car stands amongst the rest of the field and it's been home to winter testing for a number of years. The track is not easy to overtake on and so you have to qualify well. Unless there is a Safety Car or something unusual in the race then it's difficult to gain ground. We've been qualifying quite well this year so hopefully we can continue the form from previous Saturdays into Barcelona and have a trouble-free race."2022 Spanish Grand Prix Factfile: The Circuit Circuit length of 4.675km. Race distance of 308.424km. First raced in 1991. Acted as the start and finish line for cycling events in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Rated as one of the most environmentally sustainable circuits in the world. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya layout has been changed several times over the years, the most noticeable being the inclusion of a slow-speed chicane before the final corner in order to increase overtaking.  Driver and Team facts Renault-powered cars have delivered 10 pole positions, 12 wins, 524 points and eight fastest laps at the Spanish Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso scored an emotional win in 2006, driving for Renault F1 Team in front of an adoring home crowd. Fernando would repeat the feat in 2013. Esteban Ocon gained 12 places during the Miami Grand Prix, the most in his career so far. Esteban finished fifth at Barcelona in 2017, his best result of his rookie season in Formula 1. Alpine scored two points in last year's Spanish Grand Prix, courtesy of Esteban's battling performance to finish ninth, having qualified in fifth. Double top ten and Sweet 16 for BWT Alpine F1 Team in enthralling Belgian Grand Prix

BWT Alpine F1 Team previews the eighth race weekend of the 2022 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

BWT Alpine F1 Team Press Releases BWT Alpine F1 Team Press Releases 09.06.2022 11:17
Low downforce, high expectations The team continued its points-scoring run in Monaco last time out. Attention now turns east to the unique challenge of Baku where, in the past, surprises often occur. Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer reflects on Monaco and looks ahead to this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. How is the team preparing for Baku? It’s been a busy past couple of weeks for the team with the challenges of both Barcelona and Monaco back-to-back. Now, we look ahead to another double header, this time between two continents and two unique and challenging circuits. Since its introduction to the calendar a number of years ago, Baku has always provided, above all, unpredictability, as that is the pure nature of the circuit. It’s a track that brings thrilling racing with overtaking opportunities aplenty, areas of risk and reward for the drivers and there’s always potential for big opportunities there, which, we must aim to be in a position to take. We have a couple of circuit-specific modified aerodynamic upgrades for this weekend before activating the next batch of upgrades as part of our 2022 development plan. What are the main challenges of the circuit? Baku is a tricky challenge for setting up the car as it’s important to have a high top-speed to be competitive on the long straights. The middle part of the track has some slow-speed corners, so it’s a tough balance to find. The aim will be to qualify as close to the front as possible, remain sensible and patient in the race, and be in a position where we can take any opportunity that might spring up ahead of us. What are the main talking points after Monaco? We had a competitive race weekend in Monaco at a track where the characteristics probably didn’t really suit our package. That said, it was a good weekend for learning, and we can take forward this knowledge to further improve our car at different types of circuits. Again, our car qualified well with both drivers showing potential of being in and around the top six. We’re yet to execute an optimal weekend from start to finish – Friday to Sunday – and show our true potential. We’re looking forward to racing this weekend and the target is to come away from this double header with four points-scoring finishes, if not more. Back-On the streets of Baku Esteban Ocon narrowly missed out on more points in Monaco after a chaotic Grand Prix around the Principality. Despite the result, Esteban will be looking to replicate his early season form in Baku, that sees him still sit ninth on 30 points in the Championship Standings. How do you reflect on your Monaco weekend? The weekend didn’t get off to a good start, but the team did a great job to be ready for Qualifying and we really showed some good pace on Saturday afternoon. Sunday was a different story with very tricky conditions for most of the race, and in the end receiving a penalty and ending outside of the points. The result doesn’t reflect where we were as a team last weekend. However disappointing, we left Monaco with our heads held high knowing that we had a good car which was able to compete well inside the top 10. We are taking forward our learnings, some of which will be related to Baku, another street circuit. Baku next. What are your thoughts on this street circuit? It’s a street circuit I enjoy, and we know that anything can happen there. Unlike Monaco, there are plenty of overtaking spots and you’ll find significantly lower downforce because of the long straights and high-speed sections. We’ll be seeing wheel to wheel action down the straights which is very exciting for a track like this, but we will need find a balance between the straight-line speed for the straights and not taking too much downforce off the car to allow good lap-time through some of the slower corners. A good set up will be very important. What are your personal expectations ahead of the weekend? Of course, the goal will be for the weekend to be as smooth as possible. Go through our programme during the Free Practice sessions and being as ready for Qualifying as we can be. We need to ensure we are in a good position for Sunday to be able to bring home some good points for the team after the disappointment in Monaco. I am personally looking forward to racing there given last year I could only complete three laps before having to retire the car with a mechanical issue. So, I am definitely excited to get our Baku GP weekend started. Street wise Fernando Alonso will look to score points for a third race in a row when he visits Azerbaijan this weekend for his fourth appearance around the fast and twisty street circuit. Having scored his best result of the season in Monaco, the Spaniard is full of optimism as we approach Formula 1’s next double header.  Seventh place in Monaco and another points finish. How was Monaco for you? It was a good weekend for us and we deserved to come away with points. We found some pace from Friday to Sunday, and we delivered a good race overall to ensure we scored. Usually, the race in Monaco is quite predictable, but with the mixed weather and tyre choices it really created a chaotic race. I had to manage the tyres at the end as we fitted the Mediums for the restart, but once I could push, we managed to create a good enough gap to Lewis behind. I’m looking forward to Baku and where we want to make it three points finishes in a row. It’s another street circuit weekend in Baku. Do you enjoy racing on the streets? We have a lot of street circuits now in Formula 1. I do enjoy them as there is really no margin for error. Baku is a track where overtaking is very possible. In my last three races there I’ve managed to gain a number of places during the race, so it’s very different to Monaco in that respect. Tell us about the circuit from a driver’s point of view? It’s a fun track and one where overtaking is possible. There is a mixture of high speed and low speed corners and a very long straight, so setup wise you have to be prepared for this. It’ll be interesting to see how the 2022 cars find this circuit. I can’t really compare it to a track we’ve already raced on this year. Also, Saturdays don’t necessarily decide your race there too, and a Safety Car can completely shake up the order. I think it’ll be a fun one and for sure I’m excited for the challenge ahead! Alpine Academy After differing fortunes in Monaco, Olli Caldwell and Jack Doohan are back in action as Formula 2 returns in Baku. Jack and Olli will both race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this year. Both drivers have never raced at this track before, however they have shown their capability of performing at first-time tracks. In Monaco, Jack performed well in qualifying and scored good points in both races that weekend. Olli has a history of scoring well on high-speed tracks, such as Paul Ricard and Monza. Jack Doohan: “Monaco was for sure a fantastic experience. I had never raced there before so to qualify well and score good points in both races is really encouraging. Baku is another track where I have never raced at before but we’ve done our work on the sim and like Monaco, I’m confident we can score good points. Let’s get going!” Olli Caldwell: “I’m looking forward to be heading to Baku for round six of the championship. It’s another new circuit for me to learn, another new street circuit to boot. However, it’s the circuit with the highest top speed on the calendar. I’m excited to experience a new place and learning the F2 car around another new track. It’s great for my experience to learn all these new circuits so I’m looking forward to seeing how the track is” Azerbaijan Grand Prix Factfile The Circuit: Circuit length of 6.003km, making it the third longest track on the calendar. The inaugural race was held in Baku in 2016. It is the fourth newest circuit on the calendar. There has never been a repeat winner at the Grand Prix. Driver/Team facts: Renault-powered cars have delivered one win, one podium and 75 points from 22 starts at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Esteban Ocon’s best result in Azerbaijan is sixth in 2017. Esteban would score points in 18 out of the 20 races that season. Fernando Alonso’s best result in Azerbaijan is also sixth which he achieved in 2021 and he’s scored points in all but one of his races there. Fernando is 10 points away from having scored 2,000 in Formula 1. Only two drivers have scored more than Fernando. Fernando scored his best result of the season in Monaco finishing seventh.

BWT Alpine F1 Team secured its fourth double top ten finish in a row as Fernando Alonso finished fifth and Esteban Ocon seventh in a thrilling, incident-packed Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps to claim 16 points.Fernando had finished sixth at the chequered flag, but with Charles Leclerc's post-race penalty, the Spaniard was promoted to fifth to take 10 points. Esteban enjoyed a superb, overtaking-dominated display, as he progressed from sixteenth to seventh for his six points.Fernando made a fast start from third on the grid to leap to second before colliding with Lewis Hamilton into Les Combes. Fortunately, minimal damage was sustained to his A522 and he was able to continue the race. Esteban made a sensible start and did well to stay out of trouble as he made moves towards the points-scoring positions. Both drivers were on a two-stop strategy – Fernando with two stints on Mediums before switching to Hards – with Esteban on a Medium-Hard-Medium plan.Esteban made two double overtakes – one into the final chicane – the other in the closing stages of the race on Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly into Les Combes to jump from ninth to seventh. The team remains fourth in the Constructors' Championship, passing the 100-point mark on 115 points heading into the second race of the triple header next weekend in Zandvoort.Esteban Ocon, started P16, finished P7: "What a way to wrap up what's been a fantastic weekend for the team. The car was fast, and I personally had a lot of fun out there racing today, especially with those double overtakes. Well done to the team for their work this weekend, we can all be proud of ourselves. I was feeling confident all race and the car felt great and who knows what could've happened if we had started further up the road! We leave Spa satisfied, knowing it was a job well done, as well as a good haul of points for the team to extend our fourth position in the Constructors' Championship. Bring on Zandvoort."Fernando Alonso, started P3, finished P5: "I am happy with the result today with fifth place. Our performance shows that we are consistently ahead in the midfield. It's clear that when we execute our races well, these are the results we can expect to score. We were also handed a little gift with the penalty to Charles [Leclerc] at the end, but we'll take it. The incident with Lewis [Hamilton] was also unfortunate, but it's a racing incident and the car seemed fine despite the contact. We can look back and be very pleased with our weekend here with more points scored in both championships as we look ahead to Zandvoort next."Otmar Szafnauer, Team Principal: "We can be exceptionally pleased with our performance in today's race. Taking a sweet sixteen points after starting from third and sixteenth on the grid is a very good effort and certainly deserved. It was a busy race for the drivers who did well to come away unscathed after an entertaining opening few laps. Fernando was unfortunate to collide with Lewis [Hamilton] on the opening lap and it was lucky he did not sustain too much damage. Esteban too had to be sensible to take advantage of some opportunities in front, which allowed him to push towards the points-scoring positions. It was great to see both of our drivers enjoying some brilliant wheel to wheel racing at times and it was equally pleasing to see some fantastic overtakes throughout. It's been another brilliant event for the fans who will enjoy returning to Belgium next year, which is very good news for Formula 1. We'll reflect on today's race, assess where we can continue to improve, and head to Zandvoort ready to do it all over again!"
